kings of blackwater series review — raven wood (the dark bully romance series nobody is talking about)
kings of blackwater by raven wood is one of the most underrated dark romance series on kindle unlimited right now — four books, dark academia assassin school setting, and morally gray across the board.
you know when you find a series and you’re like… why is nobody talking about this?
yeah. this is that.
dark academia. assassin school. morally gray across the board.
and somehow still flying under the radar.
what you'll find in this series
a darker academy setting with assassin training, power dynamics, and characters that are all sitting somewhere in that gray area.
not pitch black. not soft.
just enough edge to keep it interesting.
and each book shifts slightly — same world, different feel.
my take
if he’s not at least a little morally questionable… what are we doing.
the books (ranked)
most of these are on kindle unlimited, so if you've been thinking about it... this might be your sign.
(i have it, use it all the time, and can't recommend it enough.) try it here →
enduring darkness (book 3)
the strongest one. the tension hits better, the dynamic feels tighter, and everything just works more here.
Alluring Darkness
she put herself in her brother’s place to become his target… but the deadliest man on campus might be the one who walks straight into her hell instead
inescapable darkness (book 2)
still strong, still engaging — this is where the series really starts finding its rhythm.
Inescapable Darkness
she saved a mafia prince once… now he’s found her and he won’t stop until she’s his even if it kills them both
irresistible darkness (book 4)
solid, still good, but slightly different energy. fits the world, just doesn’t hit quite as hard as 2 and 3.
Irresistible Darkness
she’s spent her life running off bodyguards… until one shows up who might finally be unhinged enough to handle her.
alluring darkness (book 1)
the most bully-heavy of all of them. darker in tone because of that, but not the strongest overall.
Enduring Darkness
she wanted freedom… instead she caught the attention of a killer who thinks she’s his weakest target
what makes this series different
it’s not trying to be the darkest thing you’ve ever read.
this sits more in that light gray, morally messy space.
everyone is a little off. nobody is fully good. but it doesn’t cross so far that it becomes hard to read.
and the academy setting carries it — assassin school, power, tension, hierarchy.
kings of blackwater reading order
book 1 — alluring darkness
book 2 — inescapable darkness
book 3 — enduring darkness ← start here if you want the best one first
book 4 — irresistible darkness
all four are on kindle unlimited.
final thoughts
this is one of those series where each book feels just different enough to keep you going.
not repetitive. not the same couple in a different font.
and honestly? the fact that it’s not overhyped yet kind of makes it better.
should you read it?
if you like dark academia, morally gray characters, and a bit of bully energy (especially in book one)… yes.
just don’t go in expecting something extremely dark.
this is more controlled chaos than full descent.
want more like this? say less.
the full romance library is waiting.
