haunting adeline review — h.d. carlton (spice level, tropes & is it worth it)

May 16, 2026

looking for a dark romance that’s intense, obsessive, and a little… questionable?

haunting adeline might be exactly what you’re looking for.

what you’ll find in this book

this was the book that introduced me to dark romance.

and yeah… it sets the tone.

it’s spicy, it’s thrilling, and it’s very much not for everyone.

this is full cat and mouse energy — tension, obsession, and a dynamic that doesn’t even try to feel safe.

and that’s kind of the point.

the book

most of the recs in the library are on kindle unlimited, which makes the spiral slightly easier to justify.

(i use it constantly, and it is very much part of the reader math.) try it here →

final thoughts

this is one of those books people either love… or don’t.

there’s not really an in-between.

it’s intense, it pushes boundaries, and it knows exactly what it is.

and if it works for you — it really works.

also — this is a duet.

book two (hunting adeline) is darker.

like… noticeably darker.

almost too dark for my taste — and i still devoured it.

should you read it?

if you like dark romance, obsessive dynamics, and something that actually commits to the tone… yes.

just know what you’re getting into.
