lights out review — is it worth buying? (yes. here’s why.)

May 16, 2026

lights out by navessa allen is one of the few dark romance books that will make you laugh out loud and then immediately feel things you weren’t prepared for.

it’s not on kindle unlimited. which means you have to actually pay for it. and i’m here to tell you — it’s worth it.

what is lights out about

a viral masked tiktoker and a nurse who becomes slightly obsessed with him. the stalker vibes are there — but softer than you’d expect from dark romance. this isn’t haunting adeline. it’s funnier, warmer, and more accessible than most books in this space without sacrificing the specific appeal that makes dark romance worth reading in the first place.

don’t lie. we’ve all seen, stopped, watched, and re-watched a masked tiktoker or two.

what makes it different

most dark romance takes itself very seriously. lights out doesn’t. it’s genuinely funny — which i was not expecting and was completely here for. the humor doesn’t take away from the romance or the tension, it just makes the whole thing more enjoyable to read. you’re not white-knuckling through every chapter. you’re laughing, then blushing, then staying up too late because you need to know what happens.

is it worth buying if it’s not on kindle unlimited

yes. and here’s the specific reason — lights out is the kind of book you’ll want to reread. it’s not a one-and-done dark romance that you consume and forget. the humor makes it re-readable in a way that a lot of heavier dark romance isn’t. buying it means you have it permanently, and you will go back to it. (or lend to a friend for a day)

if you’re on the fence because of the KU situation — this is me telling you to get off it.

my verdict

lights out is the dark romance you recommend to a friend who says they don’t read dark romance. it’s spicy, it’s funny, it has the tension and the obsessive energy the genre is known for — and it doesn’t require a trauma warning before you hand it over (well at least in my opinion). a genuinely great read that earns every penny of the price tag.
