twisted pawn review — spice level, tropes, and is it worth it

May 16, 2026

twisted pawn by l.j. shen is one of the most talked about dark romance books right now — here’s the honest review so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

if you are looking for something kind and gentle you are in the wrong place.

first things first — yes, this follows bad bishop.

could you read them as standalones? honestly… yes.

but i would recommend reading in order.

not because you have to — but because they hit differently together.

and they are different.

bad bishop leans more weird. darker in a way that makes you pause.

twisted pawn? this one is more… enticing.

more of a cat and mouse. the kind where the tension stays tight the entire time and you’re just waiting to see what happens next.

is twisted pawn worth it?

i only recommend books that are worth it here — but the better question is… is it worth it for you?

if you’re looking for something soft, safe, or emotionally comforting… you’re in the wrong place.

twisted pawn is dark. tense. and very aware of what it’s doing.

the mmc is obsessed — not in a soft way. more like stalker, only wants her, doesn’t really care what that means for anyone else energy.

and the fmc? she’s strong, but not untouched by life. she comes from a rough past, and you feel that in how she moves through everything.

the tension is tight. relentless. it doesn’t really let up.

and that’s what makes it so hard to stop reading.

my take

if the tension isn’t tight enough to keep me on edge the whole time… i don’t want it.

  • power imbalance
  • psychological push and pull

final thoughts

twisted pawn works because it commits.

it doesn’t try to soften anything. it doesn’t rush the tension.

it lets everything build — slowly, intentionally — until you’re fully in it.

it’s the kind of book you keep reading because you need to see how it plays out.
