books like The Right Move
the right move is one of those books i almost hate trying to compare to anything else.
because what exactly is supposed to compete with ryan shay?
the quiet obsession.
the acts of service.
the way he notices everything without needing to announce that he notices everything.
the fact that he falls so completely while still acting like having indy in his apartment is the greatest inconvenience of his life.
this is one of my favorite books ever, so no, i am not going to pretend there are five other books that are exactly the same.
there aren’t.
but if you finished the right move and need another sports romance that can make you swoon, tug at your heart, or give you a fictional man worth obsessing over…
these are the books i would put in your hands next.
start here: quick picks
5 books like the right move
1. fighting chance by mads rafferty
this is probably the closest i have come to that same combination of swooning and having my heart quietly pulled apart.
fighting chance has the sports romance, but more importantly, it has the feelings.
the kind where you become completely invested in two people finding their way to each other.
the kind where the mmc does not just say the right things.
he does the right things.
and while i am not saying anyone is replacing ryan shay…
this is the first book i would recommend if you want a man who might at least be allowed into the same conversation.
fighting chance is technically the second book in the icehawks series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Fighting Chance
✓ on kindle unlimiteda reckless hockey star gets a daughter he never knew existed… and the nanny who was supposed to help fix his life might be the one he falls for instead
2. say you swear by meagan brandy
i do not usually recommend friends to lovers.
like…
ever.
but say you swear is the exception.
because the yearning?
it competes.
this one is much more emotionally painful than the right move. it is messier, sadder, and will probably have you staring at the page wondering how you are supposed to recover from any of it.
but when it comes to a man who loves deeply, notices everything, and makes it very difficult to accept less from fictional men afterward…
noah belongs here.
ryan shay still has my heart.
but noah is one of the very few men who made a serious attempt to take it.
Say You Swear
✓ on kindle unlimitedhe saw her for who she truly was while she chased the friend she’d loved for years, and when everything finally fell apart, he was waiting.
3. hat trick by chelsea curto
hat trick is for the readers who want another hockey romance that can still make them feel something.
not just a hot hockey player.
not just locker rooms and spice.
an actual relationship you care about.
this one follows an nhl player and the team trainer helping him through injury rehabilitation, so there is vulnerability beneath the sports romance and a relationship that has to grow through something real.
it is different from the right move, but it understands that the best sports romances are never really about the sport.
Hat Trick
✓ on kindle unlimiteda hockey star loses everything after an accident… except the trainer who isn’t interested in men, let alone younger ones, but somehow can’t stay away from him.
4. fall with me by becka mack
fall with me is louder than the right move.
more playful.
more openly spicy.
and the mmc is definitely not starting from ryan shay’s quiet, controlled, i-have-no-time-for-love position.
jaxon is a playboy hockey player who is very good at avoiding relationships…
until avoiding one becomes a little difficult when the woman he cannot forget starts working as his team’s photographer.
this is the pick for anyone who wants another sports romance with a man who falls much harder than he ever intended to.
different energy.
same general problem.
you finish the book and now another athlete has joined your fictional boyfriend list.
Fall with Me
✓ on kindle unlimiteda one night stand with a grumpy hockey player turns into a job working for his team… and now he’s determined that if he falls, she’s coming down with him.
5. caught up by liz tomforde
honestly, the safest thing to do after finishing the right move might be to stay exactly where you are.
caught up is my second favorite book in the windy city series, and one of my favorite books in general.
kai rhodes is not ryan shay.
and he does not need to be.
he is a single dad, a professional baseball player, and a man who has convinced himself he can handle absolutely everything alone.
then miller arrives.
she is his coach’s daughter. his son’s new nanny. and probably the last person he imagined becoming part of his carefully controlled life.
this one gives you the same liz tomforde feeling.
and another man who will make you wonder why your standards have once again become completely unreasonable.
Caught Up
✓ on kindle unlimiteda grumpy single dad baseball player hires the one nanny he can’t fire… and she’s only supposed to be there for the summer, not become something that feels like home.
if ryan shay was your real problem…
the sports romance is important.
but the fictional man is probably why you are still thinking about the book.
