Daggermouth review — H.M. Wolfe (spice level, tropes & is it worth it)

Published Updated

daggermouth by h.m. wolfe is what happens when enemies to lovers remembers the enemies part.

the hate was real. unfortunately so was everything after.

this is a dystopian romance set in a world divided by war, secrets, and people making objectively terrible decisions because of their feelings. if your ideal slow burn takes hundreds of pages to pay off and your enemies actually want to kill each other at the beginning, you’re going to have a good time.

is daggermouth worth it?

yes.

i’m tired of books promising enemies to lovers and giving me two people who exchange a few sarcastic comments before falling in love.

that’s not what happens here.

these two have real reasons to hate each other. they’re on opposite sides. every conversation feels dangerous. every moment together feels like a mistake.

and because the book takes its time, when things finally start shifting between them?

you feel it.

if you’re here for spice, skip it.

if you’re here for tension so thick it follows you around the house after you put the book down, absolutely read it.

spice level breakdown

🌶️ / 5

listen.

there isn’t much spice.

and i genuinely did not care.

the tension was feeding me.

every interaction felt loaded. every conversation felt like it could go horribly wrong. i spent most of this book waiting for one of them to crack first.

fictional boyfriend material?

greyson serel is exactly the kind of man i should stay away from.

masked. dangerous. emotionally repressed. willing to sacrifice everything for the people he loves.

which is apparently a combination i fall for every single time.

daggermouth spicy chapters

you’re asking the wrong question.

the real question is how many chapters contain unbearable tension.

the answer is most of them.

what to read after

finished daggermouth and immediately started looking for something to fill the void?

same.

if it was the dystopian world, the enemies to lovers, and the feeling that everyone was one bad decision away from disaster, i’d pick up until i die by deidra duncan next.

it has that same high-stakes atmosphere, a darker edge, and a slow burn that actually takes its time.

final thoughts

this book reminded me why i love slow burns.

not because they’re slow.

because when they’re done right, every tiny moment feels massive.

every look matters.

every conversation matters.

every choice matters.

if you’ve been looking for enemies to lovers that actually earns the label, i get why booktok won’t shut up about this one.
