behind the stitches

meet jessica.

the maker behind fairytale stitchcraft.

in jessica’s own words

what first inspired you to start fairytale stitchcraft?

Fairytale Stitchcraft really came from the two sides of everything I love.

“Fairytale” comes from my love of getting lost in fictional worlds, whether it's through books, movies, or the stories we grew up with. I've always loved the idea that something fictional can feel so real that you want to carry a little piece of that world with you.

“Stitchcraft” is the darker side of me. I've always loved Halloween, spooky things, darker aesthetics, and anything with a little bit of magic or mystery to it. It also felt like the perfect play on witchcraft while tying in what I actually create through embroidery.

So Fairytale Stitchcraft became this little place where those two parts of me meet: stories and stitches, fairytales and darkness, a little bit whimsical and a little bit wicked. And honestly, that combination has pretty much shaped everything I create.

how do you go from a bookish idea to a finished piece?

A lot of my inspiration comes from the feeling a book leaves me with. Sometimes it's a character, a quote, or a particular scene, and other times it's just the overall atmosphere of the story.

I love creating pieces that feel like something you could actually wear in that fictional world, rather than just putting a book title on a sweatshirt.

Once I have an idea, I start figuring out how to bring it to life through embroidery. There's a lot more that goes into it than people probably realize, from choosing the right colors and materials to making sure the design stitches beautifully. Sometimes what looks perfect on a screen doesn't translate quite the same way to thread, so there's definitely some trial and error!

My favorite part is seeing the finished piece and knowing another reader might feel that same connection to the story when they wear it.

what are you reading right now, and is there a book or character you'd love to design something for next?

I'm currently reading The Blackwood Institute by J. Rose! I've always been drawn to darker stories.

As far as what I'd love to design next, my list is never-ending! I love the idea of bringing fictional worlds to life through embroidery, especially designs that capture the feeling of a book without being too obvious. Something that another reader would instantly recognize, but that you'd still love wearing even if you'd never read the story.
