books like The Ever King (for when him and that ship ruined you for everyone else)

the ever king wasn’t supposed to become one of my favorite romantasy recommendations.

and yet here we are.

because once a pirate king kidnaps a girl, starts making increasingly terrible decisions because of her, and somehow convinces you he’s right the entire time…

it’s hard to go back.

the problem is most recommendations after the ever king completely miss what made it work.

they’ll give you fantasy.

they’ll give you enemies to lovers.

they’ll even give you morally gray men.

but they won’t give you that same feeling.

that dangerous kind of devotion.

the kind where a man starts with revenge and ends up ruining all of his own plans because of one girl.

that’s what we’re chasing here.

what’s actually itching

before we get into the books…

let’s talk about what the ever king actually did to you.

because everyone walks away obsessed with something different.

some readers want another pirate king.

some want the revenge.

some want the captivity.

some want a man who absolutely refuses to make a single emotionally healthy decision.

these books all capture a different piece of that feeling.

  • morally gray men who double down instead of apologizing
  • enemies to lovers that actually feels difficult
  • obsession disguised as revenge
  • fantasy romance with real tension

find your piece.

pick your poison.

kingfisher has the same energy that made readers fall for erik.

powerful.

dangerous.

constantly making decisions he probably shouldn’t be making.

the romance is darker.

the chemistry is stronger.

and the tension is absolutely ridiculous.

if you’re chasing another morally gray fantasy man, this is usually my first recommendation.

if your favorite part was watching a fmc forced to survive impossible circumstances, read this next.

the stakes never really let up.

the romance simmers in the background while the fmc fights for survival.

and when the tension finally starts paying off?

worth it.

if you loved watching erik slowly lose his grip on his own plans because of one woman…

meet your next problem.

this one leans darker.

stranger.

a little more chaotic.

it’s the recommendation i give readers who loved the darkness of the ever king and want something that feels less polished and a little more dangerous.

frequently asked questions

what should i read after the ever king?
Quicksilver, Trial of the Sun Queen, and Runebreaker are the recommended reads I would go with after The Ever King — all three have the same morally gray love interest energy, high stakes tension, and relationships that walk a difficult line.
is the ever king a series?
yes — The Ever King is book one in the ever seas series by LJ Andrews. there are four books total: The Ever King (2023), The Ever Queen (2024), The Mist Thief (2024), and The Stolen Crown (expected 2026). read in order — this is not an interconnected standalone series, the story continues across all four books.
what is the ever seas series reading order?
book 1 — The Ever King (2023)
book 2 — The Ever Queen (2024)
book 3 — The Mist Thief (2024)
book 4 — The Stolen Crown (expected 2026)

start at the beginning — the story continues across all four books and is best read in order. note that The Stolen Crown is an upcoming 2026 release so you may be waiting on that one.

what tropes are in the ever king?
enemies to lovers, villain gets the girl, touch her and die, morally gray love interest, revenge romance, and captive romance are the main tropes. if those are your tropes every book on this list shares at least two of them.
what makes the ever king so popular on booktok?
The Ever King hits because of the combination of a genuinely dangerous love interest who makes bad decisions because of her, a revenge plot that doesn’t clean itself up neatly, and tension that builds across the whole book before it breaks. it’s romantasy that doesn’t apologize for its darkness.
