Bad Bishop review — L.J. Shen (spice level, tropes & is it worth it)
i should not have enjoyed this.
bad bishop by l.j. shen is one of those books you’ll either immediately close… or stay up until 2 a.m. because you physically cannot stop reading.
this is dark mafia romance with arranged marriage, a morally black mmc, enough plot twists to keep you guessing, and one of the most unhinged men i’ve read in a while. it is absolutely not for everyone, but if you’re the right reader, you’re going to understand why i couldn’t put it down.
is bad bishop worth it?
yes…
with an asterisk.
this isn’t a book i’d recommend to every dark romance reader. the content is heavy, there are scenes that will absolutely be dealbreakers for some people, and i need you to check the trigger warnings before picking it up.
but if you’re looking for morally questionable mafia romance with actual plot, emotional tension, and a man who is equal parts terrifying and devoted, i get why everyone is talking about this one.

spice level breakdown
spice rating: 4/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
this book doesn’t ease you into anything.
the chemistry is intense, the power imbalance is always there, and once these two finally stop fighting their feelings, the spice follows.
it’s dark.
it’s messy.
it’s exactly what you’d expect from l.j. shen.

what to read after bad bishop
still thinking about tiernan?
same.
if you loved the camorra world and want to stay in the society of villains series, your next stop is twisted pawn. it follows a different couple in the same world, so you can keep the mafia chaos going.
if it was the morally questionable mafia men that hooked you, i’d also recommend phantom mine. same obsessive energy, plenty of spice, and one of my favorite mafia romances i’ve read this year.

fictional boyfriend material?
tiernan callaghan is walking proof that therapy would’ve been cheaper.
violent, obsessive, completely unhinged, and somehow still hopelessly devoted when it counts.
he’s the kind of fictional man that makes you question every life decision you’ve ever made.

just know this is definitely not a fade-to-black romance.
final thoughts
did i question this book?
yes.
did i keep reading anyway?
also yes.
bad bishop isn’t trying to be a sweet mafia romance. it’s dark, uncomfortable at times, and completely committed to the story it’s telling.
if you like your romances morally questionable and your fictional men just a little bit concerning, i think you’ll understand why i couldn’t stop reading.
