trying to escape her past, she’s pulled back in by her brother's best friend… who might be the only thing worth staying for, even as something dark closes in.
tropes in this book
verdict
ryker bennett had me fooled for a while. just like her, i thought he couldn't stand her. but the more the story unfolds, the more you realize he's always there when it matters most. beneath all that gruff, protective energy is a man who's been carrying far more feelings than he's willing to admit, and watching those walls finally come down was one of my favorite parts of the book.
vibe
contemporary romance with brother’s best friend romance, small town romance, and who did this to you and emotional bite.
spice
🌶🌶🌶🌶 — the tension in this book is ridiculous. wanting someone you know you shouldn't, years of unresolved feelings, and a mmc who keeps trying to keep his distance only make the spice hit harder when it finally happens.
reader fit
you love brother's best friend, small-town romance, protective mmcs, "he's always been there" energy, and relationships built on years of tension and misunderstanding. if your favorite romances involve realizing the person you thought hated you might actually care the most, this one delivers.
you want a lighthearted rom-com or a romance without heavier emotional themes. this story explores trauma, bullying, and the lasting impact of growing up in an environment that never let you feel safe.
content warnings
bullying, emotional abuse, trauma, difficult family dynamics, mental health struggles, and darker relationship themes. always check the author's trigger warnings before reading.
standalone + hea
standalone romance set within the deadwood world. and yes, this one ends with a happily ever after.
