how to plan a cozy reading night that feels like an actual treat

sometimes i don’t want to go out.

but i also don’t want to spend the entire night scrolling on my phone, half watching something i’ve already seen while telling myself i’m going to read eventually.

i want staying home to feel like plans.

bath. candles. a clean house. something ridiculously good to eat. flowers, obviously. and a book i’ve been thinking about all day.

that’s my kind of night. and you can do it without spending anything, or you can fully commit to the “i deserve this” energy. both count.

first… clean your house

i know. not sexy. do it anyway.

not a deep clean. we are not reorganizing the pantry at 7 p.m. put the things away, wipe down the kitchen, make the bed, and get the dishes out of the sink. stop there.

a bath and a book feel so much better when a pile of laundry isn’t staring at you from across the room.

trust.

now pick your level of commitment

$0: use what you have

light the candle you already own. put on your comfortable pajamas. make something with what’s in the kitchen. pick a book that’s already on your tbr, or borrow one through your library.

take your bath, put a playlist on, and leave your phone somewhere inconvenient. you do not need a shopping list to have a good night.

$25-ish: little treat night

pick the thing you’re actually excited about: your favorite takeout, a small bunch of flowers, or something for dessert. choose one or two that fit your budget. “little treat” does not need to become a $90 checkout. (trust me, i’ve been there way too many times)

i like the idea of something baking while i read. apple crisp. homemade cinnamon rolls. a very good reason to get up between chapters.

clean up, take your bath, light the candles.

plans made.

with yourself.

and your fictional boyfriend.

i deserve this: we’re committing

flowers. the takeout you really wanted. dessert. bath salts. fresh pajamas. clean sheets. maybe the physical book you keep picking up and putting back.

choose the extras you’ll actually enjoy. then put your phone out of reach.

we’re unavailable.

the bath is non-negotiable

the bath is non-negotiable

at least in my house.

hot bath. candles. music. nobody asking me anything.

i keep one of those candle warmers from amazon in my bathroom at all times. game changer.

sometimes i want to read. sometimes i just want the playlist and a little silence in my head. either way, i’m not rushing through it so i can get to the next thing.

if baths aren’t your thing, take a long everything shower and put on something comfortable.

the point is to feel like the day is done.

flowers. always.

buy yourself the flowers. we are not waiting for someone else to have this idea. (also, the smell of fresh flowers just changes the whole vibe of your home.)

i hit up trader joe’s for flowers all the time. so cute and affordable.

honestly, don’t overthink it.

whatever looks good to you. a little grocery-store bunch counts. put them somewhere you’ll actually see them while you’re reading, instead of somewhere that only looks nice when you walk through the door.

and if this is your $0 night, skip the purchase. this is supposed to feel good, not turn into homework with a receipt.

dinner should be something you actually want

dinner i actually want

not the sad salad you’re eating because it’s there.

my favorite takeout? pizza or thai. that’s my kind of reading-night dinner.

pick dinner before you settle in so you don’t finally get comfortable and then realize you’re hungry. dessert can absolutely be part of the plan. i would like it on record that i support dessert.

fully support, actually.

pick the playlist

match the music to the book. darker for the morally questionable man. something atmospheric when you’re disappearing into another world. something softer if you want the whole night to slow down.

here are a few of my go-tos if you need some inspo: my reading playlists

now… what are we reading?

please don’t spend the next 45 minutes scrolling through your tbr. decide what you want the book to do to you first, and that’s where i come in…

a cozy night does not have to mean a soft book. honestly, the softer the night, the more messed up the book for me.

none of those feel right? find what to read next and follow your actual mood.

my perfect reading night

nowhere else to be

if i’m doing this properly?

the house is clean. flowers are on the table. takeout is ordered. something is baking. i’ve taken a bath.

candles lit. playlist on. phone nowhere near.

hopefully a fictional man is making questionable decisions by chapter three.

perfect night.

the only rule

don’t make it productive.

you do not have to finish the book. read 100 pages. photograph the bath. buy anything. or make the evening look like someone else’s idea of cozy.

the entire point is giving yourself a night where there’s nowhere else you’re supposed to be.

take the bath. eat the dessert. enjoy the flowers. read until you don’t want to anymore.

that’s the treat.

before you go…

if choosing the book is the hard part, try these books for a reading slump or browse the full romance library.

and if you’re mostly here for the man, meet your fictional boyfriend. priorities.

enjoy your night in. <333
