Under Your Scars review — Ariel N. Anderson (spice level, tropes & is it worth it)
under your scars by ariel n. anderson is one of the only sad ending romances i recommend without hesitation.
this book hurt. badly.
if you’ve ever wondered what would happen if batman fell in love with the one person who could see the man beneath the mask, welcome. this is billionaire romance, power dynamics, emotional devastation, and a love story that never pretends it’s going to play fair.
is under your scars worth it?
yes.
but only if you’re prepared for the ending.
i’m serious.
this is not a happy ending romance. there is no last-minute miracle coming to save you. what you get instead is one of the most emotional, unforgettable love stories i’ve read.
skip it if you’re looking for comfort.
read it if you’re looking for a book that will leave you staring at the wall when you’re done.

a serial killer meets the one girl who sees something human in him… and decides she’s his, even if loving him destroys her.
spice level breakdown
spice rating: 4/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
the power dynamic in this book is doing a lot of work.
he’s rich. powerful. feared. she’s one of the few people who sees through all of it.
the chemistry is immediate, but what really worked for me was the emotional intimacy. every interaction feels loaded because you know how much they both need each other long before they’re willing to admit it.
tropes in under your scars

- boss and employee
- tragic romance

what to read after under your scars
trying to figure out what part of this book had you in a chokehold?
if it was the stalker-ish obsession and emotional intensity that got you, pick up haunting adeline or that sik luv next.
if it was the billionaire romance angle you loved, try between love and loathing. still rich man problems, just significantly less likely to emotionally destroy you.

fictional boyfriend material?
christian reeves is what happens when a serial killer mistakes love for salvation.
the problem is once christian decides you’re his, letting you go is no longer an option.

final thoughts
i don’t recommend sad ending romances often.
mostly because i don’t particularly like them and most of them don’t earn it.
this one does.
it’s heartbreaking, emotional, beautifully written, and one of the few books i’ve finished and immediately wanted to force other people to read. (with love of course)
