Twisted Pawn review — L.J. Shen (spice level, tropes & is it worth it)

Published Updated

twisted pawn by l.j. shen is what happens when first love turns into unfinished business.

he never forgave her.

that’s the point.

this is book two in the society of villains series. technically, you can read it as a standalone, but i’d read bad bishop first. not because you have to… because these books hit harder together.

if you like second chance romance, obsessive mmcs, cat and mouse tension, and a man who spent years pretending he stopped loving her, welcome.

is twisted pawn worth it?

i only recommend books that are worth it here

but the better question is… is it worth it for you?

if you’re looking for something soft, safe, or emotionally comforting… you’re in the wrong place.

twisted pawn is dark. tense. and very aware of what it’s doing.

the mmc is obsessed — not in a soft way. more like stalker, only wants her, doesn’t really care what that means for anyone else energy.

and the fmc? she’s strong, but not untouched by life. she comes from a rough past, and you feel that in how she moves through everything.

the tension is tight. relentless. it doesn’t really let up.

and that’s what makes it so hard to stop reading.

spice rating: 4/5

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ / 5

this book is built on obsession.

every scene feels loaded because these two know each other so well.

the spice isn’t playful.

it’s possessive.

it’s years of unresolved feelings finally catching up with them.

still thinking about achilles?

same.

if you haven’t already, go back and read bad bishop. it gives so much more context to this world and makes achilles hit even harder.

if you’re looking for another mafia romance with obsession, yearning, and a man who is completely gone for one woman, pick up phantom mine next.

achilles ferrante never stopped loving her.

he just got better at pretending he hated her.

assassin. obsessive. emotionally constipated. and somehow still one of the biggest romantics in this series.

final thoughts

i love a second chance romance.

i love it even more when neither of them has actually moved on.

twisted pawn isn’t about forgiving and forgetting.

it’s about what happens when two people carry years of resentment, longing, and unfinished business into the same room.

if bad bishop made you stay for the world, twisted pawn will make you stay for achilles.
