Phantom Mine review — Khai Hara (spice level, tropes & is it worth it)
i’ve only given six stars to six books on this entire website.
phantom mine by khai hara is one of them.
this is mafia romance with obsessive yearning, love at first sight done right, actual plot, and a man who quietly spends the entire book proving why patience might be the hottest personality trait. it’s book two in the london underworld series, but you can absolutely read it as a standalone.
is phantom mine worth it?
without hesitation, yes.
after reading three books by khai hara, this is the one i’d hand someone and say, “start here.”
the romance is incredible. the plot actually matters. the mystery kept me turning pages. and matteo… matteo is the reason this book became a six-star read.
if you like mafia romance where the romance is just as important as everything happening around it, you’re going to understand why i haven’t stopped talking about this book.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
this book is spicy.
but what really got me was the yearning.
matteo is completely gone for valentina, and khai hara somehow made me believe in love at first sight… a trope i usually roll my eyes at.
every spicy scene feels intense because you spend so much time watching him quietly yearn for her over and over again.

what to read after phantom mine
finished phantom mine and now you’re wondering how you’re supposed to move on from matteo?
same.
if you want another mafia world to completely disappear into, start the society of villains series with bad bishop, then go straight into twisted pawn.
they’re interconnected standalones following different couples, and while i loved bad bishop, twisted pawn ended up being my favorite of the two.

matteo leone is proof that yearning is, in fact, the hottest personality trait.
patient. obsessive. quietly devoted. the discarded second son who loved her long before she ever realized she was his.

this book sits alongside insatiable for me.
that’s how much i loved it.
i don’t hand out six stars often, and i definitely don’t recommend every mafia romance i read.
phantom mine earned both.
