3 spicy romantasy books nobody is screaming about yet
if you’ve already read the obvious ones, this list is for you.
not the books everyone on booktok has been screaming about for two years.
the books that made me stop mid-chapter and wonder why nobody is talking about them.
these are the spicy romantasy books i immediately started recommending after i finished them. the ones with obsessive love interests, ridiculous chemistry, actual plot twists, and enough tension to make you ignore your responsibilities for a few days.
what counts as spicy romantasy anyway
for me, spicy romantasy isn’t just about how many explicit scenes are on the page.
i want tension.
i want obsession.
i want a love interest who looks at one inconvenience in her direction and starts considering violence.
some of these books are slower burns than others. some are darker. some lean heavier into fantasy than romance.
but every book on this list delivers a romance that feels just as important as the fantasy plot.
- morally gray men you’ll immediately forgive for everything
- enough tension to carry entire chapters
- fantasy worlds that don’t require a spreadsheet to understand
the underrated picks
i didn’t pick these because they’re hidden gems.
i picked them because i finished them and immediately thought, “how are more people not talking about this?”
all three have memorable love interests, strong romantic tension, and something unique that separates them from the hundreds of romantasy books currently fighting for attention on your tbr.
book #1
Between Tides & Thunder
✓ on kindle unlimiteda princess. a political marriage. and the wrong brother.
if you’re someone who constantly complains that enemies to lovers isn’t actually enemies to lovers anymore, start here.
a princess is forced into a political marriage with a neighboring kingdom.
she expects a prince.
instead she gets his brother.
zevayr is one of those characters who gets better the longer you’re with him. everyone calls him a monster. everyone fears him. everyone thinks they know exactly who he is.
they don’t.
watching mayah slowly unravel the truth underneath his reputation is what makes this book work so well. the romance isn’t rushed. the trust isn’t instant. every step feels earned.
spice-wise, this is more tension than explicit scenes.
honestly, the hand brushes, lingering looks, and forced proximity do more damage than most books with twice the spice.
and then there’s the plot twist.
i’m saying absolutely nothing.
just know i didn’t see it coming.
book #2

The Ever King

look.
if pirates, kidnappings, ancient magic, and morally questionable men are your thing, you need this one.
the ever king feels darker than a lot of mainstream romantasy recommendations without becoming exhausting to read.
the romance is obsessive.
the chemistry starts early.
and the stakes keep climbing.
this is one of those books where the love interest feels dangerous from the moment he walks onto the page, which is exactly what i want from a darker romantasy.
it’s also noticeably spicier than between tides & thunder.
if zevayr is the man you slowly fall for over hundreds of pages, erik is the man who shows up and immediately starts causing problems.
in the best way possible.
book #3
Runebreaker

“The executioner was bleeding for me.”
and honestly?
that line alone sold me.
aelie can break fae magic with her bare hands.
kairos is a ruthless fae executioner bound by powerful magic.
the moment she frees him, everything goes completely off the rails.
forced proximity.
captor and captive.
he falls first.
mating bond tension.
a fae king who is absolutely not normal about her.
this book feels like it was written specifically for readers who love possessive, obsessive fantasy men and aren’t interested in apologizing for it.
if your favorite part of romantasy is watching two people become each other’s biggest weakness, start here.
