Handsome Devil review — L.J. Shen (spice level, tropes & is it worth it)
handsome devil by l.j. shen is what happens when you hand me a cold, emotionally unavailable billionaire and expect me not to become completely invested.
unfortunately for my standards, it worked.
this is billionaire romance with forced proximity, emotional walls, slow-burn payoff, and one of those mmcs who spends most of the book pretending he doesn’t feel anything. if emotionally unavailable men are your kryptonite, you’re in the right place.
is handsome devil worth it?
yes.
especially if your favorite romances are the ones where the mmc is his own biggest problem.
this isn’t insta-love or over-the-top obsession. it’s watching a man who’s spent years keeping everyone at double triple arm’s length slowly realize there’s one woman he can’t walk away from.
if you’re looking for soft billionaire romance, this isn’t it.
if you’re looking for a man who would burn down his entire empire before admitting he’s in love…
welcome.

spice rating: 4/5
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
the tension builds.
the spice delivers.
and somehow it only gets better because tate spends most of the book convincing himself he’s absolutely not in love.
until he is.
then suddenly everything belongs to her.

what to read after handsome devil
if it was tate’s morally gray, emotionally unavailable energy that completely did you in, read bad bishop next.
different world, same “this man desperately needs therapy” energy.
if it was the billionaire romance, emotional tension, and watching a powerful man completely unravel over one woman, pick up under your scars.
just…
prepare yourself emotionally for that one.

“Listen to me carefully, Gia. I am yours. All of me belongs to you. My body—yours. Brain—yours. Money—yours. Kingdom—yours. Every inch. Every cell. Every atom. Every single breath has your name on it.”
fictional boyfriend material?
tate is proof that emotionally unavailable men eventually lose the battle.
cold. calculating. morally gray.
then one woman walks into his life and suddenly he’d burn down his entire kingdom for her.

final thoughts
i’m going to say something.
i think tate is one of my favorite billionaire mmcs i’ve read in a long time.
not because he’s rich.
because watching an emotionally unavailable man slowly realize one woman has become his entire world will never get old.
there’s also a twist connecting their pasts that i won’t spoil…
just know it makes everything hit even harder.
