my 5 favorite romantasy books of all time (yes, Kai Azer made the list)
i’ve read a lot of romantasy over the last few years.
some completely lived up to the hype.
some… absolutely did not.
these are the books i still think about. the ones i recommend over and over again because they gave me everything i wanted: incredible worlds, romance that actually made me care, and mmcs that permanently raised the bar
some, everyone and their mom has definitely heard of.
a couple deserve way more attention.
before we start…

what you’ll find in this list
these aren’t just popular romantasy books.
they’re the ones i compare every new romantasy to.
my take
i’ll forgive almost anything in a romantasy…
a confusing magic system.
too many kingdoms.
even a map i’ll never look at. (but LOVE)
what i won’t forgive…
a boring mmc and fmc with no dynamic.
give me tension.
give me obsession.
give me a man i’d accidentally start a war for.
the romantasy books that permanently ruined me
#1 powerless
kai azer.
that’s it.
that’s the review.
okay… not really.
this book completely surprised me. the banter is incredible, the chemistry never lets up, and kai is still one of my favorite mmcs i’ve ever read. who wouldn’t want the ruthless enforcer on his knees for you?
i genuinely never wanted this series to end.
Powerless
✓ on kindle unlimiteda girl with no powers must survive brutal trials to prove her worth and suddenly finds herself pulled into the kingdom’s orbit around the prince and his brother.
#2 the ever king
i will never understand why more people aren’t talking about this series.
it’s darker than most romantasy.
the plot actually keeps you guessing.
the spice delivers.
and the romance? her father locked him in the cellar, they met while he was captive, and honestly i’m blushing thinking about it again.
The Ever King
✕ not on kindle unlimitedafter her father kidnaps him, he escapes and takes his daughter in return, and when they finally meet again, it isn’t what either of them expected.
#3 quicksilver
i was obsessed almost immediately.
the tension hooked me. callie hart did a great job writing an mmc that is supposed to be everything dark and mysterious.
one of those books where “just one more chapter” turns into finishing the whole thing.
Quicksilver
✓ on kindle unlimiteda thief accidentally binds herself to a fae warrior known as death… and now her only way home is trusting the one man who might destroy her first.
#4 between tides and thunder
proof that a standalone romantasy can still completely wreck you.
she’s a naive princess… so you think and he’s the brother sent to bring her to marry his brother…
everything just… works.
criminally underrated.
Between Tides & Thunder
✓ on kindle unlimiteda princess. a political marriage. and the wrong brother.
#5 fourth wing
yes.
everyone has read it.
yes.
i’m still putting it on this list.
because xaden deserves to be here.
and honestly…
onyx storm completely sold me on this series again.
i’m officially back on board.
Fourth Wing
✓ on kindle unlimitedthrown into a brutal dragon rider academy she was never meant to survive, she’s forced to prove she’s not fragile… while catching the attention of the one man who might be the most dangerous of all.
honorable mentions
dire bound & we who will die
if your favorite part of romantasy is the longing, read these next. they’re both much slower burns with lighter spice, but i’d happily wait all over again for the payoff.

currently ruining my standards for fantasy mmcs
if you loved these…
keep the obsessions going.
want more like this? say less.
